Composite vs. Porcelain — Which Type of Veneer Is Better?

If you have one or more teeth whose appearance you would like to change, veneers may be an excellent cosmetic dentistry option for you. They can disguise a range of flaws and give you a radiant, natural-looking smile. But did you know there are two different types of veneers in Ponte Vedra Beach? Both offer unique advantages. Let’s take a moment to compare composite and porcelain veneers.

Materials

Porcelain veneers are constructed out of dental-grade porcelain. They are quite thin (usually just half a millimeter or so), but they are extremely durable. They are also nonporous, which means they are highly resistant to stains. Composite veneers are made out of the same material that is used for tooth-colored fillings. They are more prone to breakage and staining than porcelain veneers, but they hold up fairly well under normal wear and tear.

Process

The porcelain veneers process requires at least two appointments. After your dentist prepares your teeth and takes impressions of them, a dental laboratory fabricates your veneers before sending them back to your local dental office. The composite veneer process is much quicker and usually takes just one appointment. Your dentist simply prepares your teeth, molds the composite over them, hardens the material with a special light, and then reshapes the veneers until they reach the desired look.

Appearance

Both types of veneers can be shade-matched to complement the surrounding dentition. Your cosmetic dentist in Ponte Vedra Beach can design them so they are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Plus, the two types of veneers can correct most (if not all) of the same imperfections, including chips, small gaps, discoloration, and more.

Longevity

Porcelain veneers typically last for 10 – 15 years or longer before they need to be replaced. Keep in mind that they are considered a permanent treatment because placing them requires the removal of some tooth enamel. Composite veneers tend to last for 4 – 8 years. At the end of their lifespan, you can choose whether or not to replace them because they require less tooth preparation than their porcelain counterparts.

Price

The composite veneers process is quicker and simpler than that for porcelain veneers, which translates into a lower price. However, it is important to compare both cost and value. The longer lifespan and remarkable durability of porcelain veneers might make them a less costly option in the long run.

Making Your Choice

There is no simple way to answer the question, “Are porcelain or composite veneers better?” Both treatments have their pros and cons. Your dentist can talk with you about your cosmetic options and help you settle on the one that is the best fit for your circumstances.
