How to Teach Your Children Proper Oral Health Habits

At Ponte Vedra Complete Dentistry, we are dedicated to educating the residents of Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Nocatee, and Palm Valley not only with excellent dental care but also with oral health education.

Did you know that most adults have never been educated on the proper methods to brushing and flossing? Several months back we posted a blog that detailed exactly how to properly brush. Why has that education never been provided?  First, it was not until the 1940’s that Charles C. Bass began to study brushing and created the Bass method.  Before then, even dentists did not have a great grasp on how to properly brush.

Even though a select few have known the proper methods in more recent years, the chances that this information was relayed to patients then subsequently handed down through generations has been slim.  We hope to play our small part in changing this tradition.  If you have children, we encourage you to teach them the best methods to practice optimal oral healthcare.  If this blog is not enough information, feel free to contact us any time for more information.

Do you know how often you should teach your children to brush?

Most dentists agree that two brushings per day is sufficient. Dental floss should be used once per day. Many people like to use floss in the evening to sleep in clean comfort.

Brushing is crucial to oral health success and that starts at an extremely early age.  When your children are infants their gums should be gently cleaned with a soft moist cloth or gauze. This will prevent the buildup of bacteria and their byproducts. When the first teeth appear, they should be brushed. A special brush for toddlers can be purchased. They have a small head, soft bristles, and a large handle. A small dab of fluoride containing toothpaste should be used and any toothpaste containing fluoride should be kept out of the reach from children.

Brushing should be fun for your child if possible. Many parents have found success creating songs or games for brushing time. It is important to note that during developmental periods, positive habits should be encouraged in an attempt to create good habits for life. This is another reason that early dental visits can be important. A positive relationship between your child and the dentist can be created and that relationship can be nurtured for life.

At Ponte Vedra Complete Dentistry, we love the American Dental Association’s oral health education site called MouthHealthy.
