A dental crown is indicated in many different situations. Commonly, when a tooth has decayed it will receive a filling. When the decay has reached a crucial level, a simple restoration often will not suffice. A crown can be used in many situations and can provide support for the tooth by encasing it circumferentially.
Historically crowns were at minimum a two appointment treatment. The first appointment was a buildup and preparation of the tooth. A buildup is essentially adding to the tooth structure to provide enough tooth to put the crown on. The preparation is a slight reduction in tooth surface to provide room for the crown. If the gum tissue surrounding the tooth is healthy enough, an impression of the preparation can be used to send to the lab for crown fabrication. If not, the second appointment is to be used to take that impression. Finally, the crown comes back from the lab and the dentist will cement or bond the crown into place.
With technological advances of recent years, the necessity for multiple appointments can be avoided.
Ponte Vedra Complete Dentistry now utilizes E4D Technologies to provide crowns in a day. This CAD/CAM (computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing) allows us to produce an intra-oral scan. This scan goes into the computer system and from there we can create and mill a crown while you wait. No costly and laborious second and third appointments!
The PlanScan intra-oral blue laser scanner is faster and more accurate than scanners of the past. The precision allows us to create prosthetics that are incredibly accurate. The accuracy not only provides for optimum esthetics but also creates healthy margins and restoration anatomy that encourages health for years to come. Our smile gallery provides a terrific example of an E4D restoration.
