Emergency Dentistry

Ponte Vedra Complete Dentistry is a family, cosmetic, and emergency dentist located in Ponte Vedra Beach.  We understand that it is important to have a dental home.  In addition, it is important to have a dentist that can treat you in the event of an emergency.  Dental emergencies can vary significantly in the results depending on how fast and effective they are treated.  Below is some information regarding dental emergencies.  If you feel you are in an emergency situation, please call us at (904) 285-7711.

What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

While there is no specific set of criteria that define an emergency, there are many different situations that require immediate treatment.  Pain in the oral cavity can halt every aspect of life.  There is no way to quantify dental pain but if symptoms are so severe that you are debilitated, treatment should be sought immediately.  A few other situations that can be considered an emergency are teeth that have been cracked, broken, or completely removed from trauma.  If you have broken a tooth to the extent that the pulp (the inner aspect of the tooth) is exposed, pain can be significant and treatment should be immediate.  Also, any major injury to the gums, inside of mouth, or tongue should be addressed as soon as possible.

While some dental pain can be tolerated, there are some situations where you should contact your dentist without hesitation.  If you have a tooth that gets knocked out, it is possible to save it.  If you wait too long, there is no chance of replacement.  If impact moves teeth out of the normal alignment, treatment sooner rather than later gives a much better prognosis.  If you have any swelling inside the oral cavity, we recommend that you contact us immediately.  In addition to correcting the cause of the swelling we want to ensure that the airway does not become blocked and disable breathing.

Dr. Harth and Dr. Townsend have had years of experience and training in many different types of emergency dental procedures including emergency exams, medications, root canals, tooth extractions, fillings, and crowns.   We welcome new patients in emergency situations and suggest that if you are experiencing a possible dental emergency that you do not hesitate and call (904) 285-7711.
