What are the Cosmetic Dentistry Options?

Cosmetic dentistry is a progressive segment of dentistry.  There are constantly new materials, technologies, and methods to attain the best possible results.  Cosmetic dentistry refers to any sections of dentistry that are designed to make the teeth, gums, and smile of patients as aesthetically pleasing as possible.  You will see many dentists market themselves as cosmetic dentists.  There is no formally recognized training involved in cosmetic dentistry so dentists can freely use this term in their description.  This information makes it crucial for patients to interview the prospective doctor to determine that particular doctor’s qualifications.  The best way to become trained as a “cosmetic dentist” is to become a master at the different treatments involved in this section as well as the ability to properly treatment plan any situation.

Veneers

Veneers are thin shells that are designed to cover the teeth in the parts of the mouth that show during speech or when smiling.  These can be used to cover up unsightly gaps, cracks, chips, or discolorations.  These shells are made of porcelain and the end result is exactly what a patient would want, healthy natural looking teeth.  When veneers are able to be used, they benefit the patient because only a small amount of tooth structure is necessary to be reduced from the natural tooth.

Crowns

Crowns are similar to veneers.  They generally cover the entire portion of the tooth that is above the gum line.  They can be made of gold, porcelain, or a mix between the two.  They have the ability to be as aesthetic as veneers.  When crowns are indicated there generally is a structural deficiency in the natural tooth like a large crack, a previous root canal, or a large cavity.

Whitening

Teeth can have intrinsic or extrinsic stains, which means stains coming from the inside or the outside of the teeth respectively.  Many of the stains that lie inside of the tooth structure cannot be removed by the over the counter whitening systems.  The dentist can remove many of these stains with professional tooth whitening.  Your dentist will build a custom whitening tray that is specific for your teeth.  This allows for a uniform coverage of the gel.

For patients that do not display hypersensitivity to whitening gels, Dr. Harth and Dr. Townsend provide in office one visit tooth whitening services.  This is called Opalescence Boost.  This is perfect for the patient that may not be as disciplined in using the trays repetitively.

Bonding

Bonding is one method used in cosmetic dentistry that can allow the dentist to reshape teeth to a more desired outcome.  This is often utilizing a dental composite material that bonds to the tooth structure.  This composite can be designed to look exactly like the natural tooth.  This is terrific for chipped teeth.

Full Smile Makeovers

A full smile makeover begins with a thorough diagnostic analysis from your dentist.  This will allow them to properly determine the course of treatment using one or more of the above options.  It is amazing what a smile makeover can do for you.
